PSORIASIS JACKSONVILLE ORANGE PARK

Psoriasis is a chronic skin disorder characterized by raised red, silver, or white scales, or by plaques that can occur anywhere on the body, but is mostly seen on the scalp, knees, elbows, hands, and feet. The plaques or scales are from an over activity of the skin. Psoriatic patients regenerate their epidermal layer of skin more frequently than other people. There is an associated risk of heart attack and psoriatic arthritis in patients with this skin disorder.

Treatment options include:

  • Topical Medications — Cortisone, Vitamin D, Anthralin, Coal, Tar, Salicylic Acid, Tacrolimis, Pimecrolimus.
  • Oral Medications — Soriatane and Methotrexate
  • Biologics are injectable medicines that attack the precise immune reactions thought to be involved in the cause of psoriasis. Some examples of biologics are:
    • Adalimumab (Humira®)
    • Alefacept (Amevive®)
    • Entanercept (Embrel®)
    • Infliximab (Remicade®)
    • Ustekinumab (Stelara®)
  • Excimer laser/ultraviolet (UV) light — this is a new technology utilizing smaller spot size and a more specific wave length making this delivery of UV light more precise. Thereby, the result is an improved appearance of psoriasis by decreasing the number of cells and the inflammatory response. Park Avenue Dermatology is the #1 provider for XTRAC® laser treatment on the East Coast for psoriasis.

There is another less common form of Psoriasis called Guttate Psoriasis; this form may clear completely or become chronic. It usually occurs following a weakening of the immune system, for example, after an infection.

Other possible triggers could be:

  • Strep Throat or After Other Infections
  • Certain Medications
  • Trauma
  • Alcohol Abuse
  • Excessive Sun Exposure
  • Chemotherapy
